Philippines
The Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, with a population of over 109 million people. It is a developing country with a diverse economy that has been growing steadily in recent years. However, poverty remains a significant issue in the country, especially in rural areas.
At A Glance
- We work with the government in the Philippines and other partners to help address a range of health issues, including family planning, nutrition, and strengthening primary health care and public health systems.
- We support efforts to help smallholder farmers in the Philippines increase their yields and reduce food insecurity in the country.
- We provide food, clean water, shelter, and medical supplies.
Overview
We want all of the Philippines’s children, mothers, and families to be able to lead healthy and productive lives, and we want the country’s most marginalized people to have opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty. To work toward these goals, we partner with the government, the private sector, and civil society organizations.
Displacement
Displacement in the Philippines is due to natural disasters and conflict. The Philippines has been hit by several typhoons in recent years, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure and leaving thousands of families homeless. The government and non-governmental organizations have been working to provide aid and shelter to displaced families, but the problem remains a significant challenge.
Challenge Facing Philippines
One of the significant problems facing the Philippines is child poverty. According to the latest data, approximately 1 in 4 Filipino children live in poverty, and many lack access to basic needs such as food, water, and education. Child labor is also prevalent in the country, with an estimated 5.5 million children involved in child labor, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO).
Overview Of The Situation
Rising Poverty
The poverty rate in the Philippines has declined in recent years, but it is still high, with an estimated 16.6% of the population living below the poverty line in 2021. The poverty situation is most severe in rural areas, where about 80% of the poor population lives. Moreover, the country is prone to natural disasters, including typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, which have caused widespread damage to infrastructure and displacement of people.

4 Things to Know About the Philippines Crisis
Due to the extreme situation, families are significantly impacted. Many of them suffer from malnutrition, clean water problems, and sanitation issues; this challenge will take years to improve throughout the country.
- Education is a crucial tool in breaking the cycle of poverty in the Philippines. The government has made progress in improving access to education, but many children still face significant barriers, such as the cost of schooling, lack of transportation, and inadequate infrastructure. Supporting education initiatives can help provide opportunities for children and youth to break out of poverty.
- Addressing child labor. The ILO, along with other organizations, has been working with the government and businesses to eliminate child labor in the country. Supporting initiatives that focus on improving access to education and vocational training for children and youth can help reduce child labor and provide them with better economic opportunities.
- Natural disasters and displacement remain significant challenges in the Philippines. Providing aid and shelter to affected families and supporting initiatives that promote disaster preparedness can help mitigate the impact of natural disasters and reduce displacement.
- The Philippines is a country with a diverse economy and a rich cultural heritage, but poverty, child poverty, and displacement remain significant challenges. Supporting initiatives that focus on education, child labor, and disaster preparedness can help alleviate poverty and improve the lives of children and families in the country.
