Liberia

We want all of Liberia’s children, mothers, and families to be able to lead healthy and productive lives, and we want the country’s most marginalized people to have opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty. To work toward these goals, we partner with the government, the private sector, and civil society organizations.

At A Glance

Overview

Liberia is a country located on the west coast of Africa, with a population of around 5 million people. Despite its abundant natural resources, including diamonds, gold, and timber, Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world. The country is still recovering from the effects of a civil war that lasted from 1989 to 2003, which devastated the country’s infrastructure and economy.

Challenge Facing Liberia

One of the biggest challenges facing Liberia is the lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities. This has resulted in high rates of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, which are especially dangerous for young children. According to UNICEF, only 19% of the population has access to basic sanitation facilities, and only 61% have access to safe drinking water. This lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities has a significant impact on children’s health and well-being.

Overview Of The Situation

Over 60% of the Liberian population lives below the poverty line

According to UNICEF, over 60% of the Liberian population lives below the poverty line. This has resulted in widespread malnutrition, especially among children, with 1 in 3 children in the country suffering from stunted growth due to malnutrition. Many families are unable to afford basic necessities such as food, clean water, and healthcare, which has resulted in a high infant and maternal mortality rate. In addition to poverty, the country is also dealing with a refugee crisis, as thousands of refugees from neighboring countries such as Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast have sought refuge in Liberia due to conflict in their home countries.
